Robert F. Hartsook, JD, EdD
Chairman and CEO of Hartsook Companies

In America today, Bob Hartsook stands in the top tier among those who have influenced the scope and direction of fundraising. His impact extends far beyond the individual organizations he has counseled and the fundraisers whose careers have been shaped by his thinking.

Bob was recognized with the naming of the first academic Chair in Fundraising in the world with Indiana University’s Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising. “It is fitting that the first chair in fundraising acknowledges the career of Bob Hartsook who is one of America’s most dedicated and recognized fundraising counsel,” said Gene Tempel, Executive Director of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

Bob’s many honors have been highlighted by his selection for the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy Spirit of Philanthropy Award in 2004. In 2003 Emporia State University honored him with their Distinguished Alumni Award.

Bob believes that every organization deserves to have its dream tested, that people in our country really want to make a difference and that – properly prepared by organizations – they will step up to the task. Since its founding in 1987, Hartsook Companies, Inc., has conducted more than 1,700 campaigns ranging from $500,000 to more than a billion, which have raised many billions of dollars. In 2005, Hartsook Companies, Inc. became a company wholly-owned by its employees through the creation of an ESOP.

“The big gift is available to all organizations that understand how to approach donors for their optimum commitment,” says Bob, whose Integrated Fundraising Campaignsm national seminar series has introduced thousands across the country to the principles of raising capital and endowment funds while at the same time sustaining annual fund contributions so essential to an organization’s long-term strength.

Bob’s ability to write, teach and inspire confidence has earned a devoted audience for his seminars, books and articles. Through the years, his articles have been published in national and international journals and are now available in monograph format through ASR Philanthropic Publishing.

Bob also has written six books – his latest, “Reality Fundraising: Proven, Practical Ideas for the Enlightened Fundraiser.” Others include “Closing that Gift!,” “How to Get Million Dollar Gifts and Have Donors Thank You!,” “Getting Your Ducks in a Row!,” “Nobody Wants to Give Money Away!” and “On the Money!”

In addition to serving as the Chairman and CEO of Hartsook Companies, Inc., Bob is Chairman, President and CEO of Hartsook Enterprises, Resources and Trusts, Inc. which manages his business interests in publishing, small business counseling, communications and media, real estate development, The Hartsook School of Consulting, fundraising recognition, and his philanthropic interest with the Hartsook Foundation for Fundraising and the Hartsook Fundraising Centers.

Bob holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics, a master’s degree in counseling, a law degree and a doctorate in education. He has a son, Austin, who lives with him on Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.
